The Art Hotel of Corfu Town welcomes Easter & Spring!

Spring is upon us; Summer’s predecessor has officially arrived and the island of Corfu is getting ready to welcome the festivities of the Orthodox Easter at the end of April.

Easter in the City:

Corfu is known for having its own specific traditions during Easter, with it’s main squares buzzing with life. Here are some of the Easter highlights visitors will enjoy:

  • Mpotides - Clay decanters full of water are thrown from balconies onto the main square at 11am on Holy Saturday; the sound of them crashing fills the square with vibrations that resemble an artificial earthquake!
  • Philharmonic marching band - the legendary band marches the streets playing joyous tunes signifying the end of Easter mourning.
  • Mastelo - At Pinia (the commercial centre of Corfu), the ‘Piniadori’ place a decorated half-barrel full of water, coaxing passersby to make a coin donation as a gesture of goodwill. Then, when the first Resurrection begins, the bravest person must delve into the cold water to retrieve the coins!
  • Traditional Corfu dishes - Tslichourda (special Easter stew), Fogatsa (thick kneaded sweet milk bread), Kolompines (‘dove’ shaped decorated bread)

Furthermore, Spring in Corfu is more than just about Easter! The lovely warm weather we are currently enjoying will allow you to experience the Town as much as possible.

As Corfu is a rainbow of culture, getting to see the Town and all its visuals, people, colours and aromas, is the ultimate way to experience Corfu. The rich history of the island has contributed to its multicultural identity as remnants of Venetian, French and British culture have intertwined with the local Greek traditions. This can be observed by a simple walk around Corfu town, culminating in an aesthetic multitude of beautiful buildings, piazzas, cathedrals, churches, forts, castles and mansions, including the miniature islet of Pontikonisi that you can visit by boat.

Art & the City:

Corfu is the proud host of various interesting museums such as: the Byzantine Museum, the Asiatic Art Museum, the Solomos Museum, the Music Museum, and the historic Mon Repos Palaepolis among others. As homage to our town’s history and aptitude for the arts, our hotel has been designed with an art orientation, and proudly showcases some selected 18th century antiques.

Corfu also boasts the famous Philharmonic Society of Corfu that was founded in 1840, that march the streets on special occasions playing music; the band is now considered a characteristic element of Corfu!

Staying at The Mon Repos Art Hotel gives our guests the chance to experience the city thoroughly as it is centrally located. Our hotel promenade is your starting point to explore the town and take in the culture, as well while also maintaining your privacy; at only 1 km away from the town centre, and on the sea front, the Mon Repos Palace is an adult only hotel that offers couples the exclusivity of desired privacy but also the option to pursue a small city excursion by simply stepping out in the town.
