Sauntering around Corfu Town will take you back in time...

Mild weather combined with stunning buildings that carry a turbulent history between their columns. Lush gardens, tinted with the warm hues of Autumn and quaint alleyways that are strewn with fallen leaves. People sauntering around admiring the elegant, urban beauty of the old town; shops and stores are at the ready to serve their customers, who want to indulge in the relaxed and laid back ambiance of the town, with a coffee & cake break! As Corfu town prepares for Winter to come, it proudly displays all the reasons why it has been considered the capital of the Ionian islands.

A little bit of it’s interesting history:
Corfu town has a grandeur that cannot be denied. It’s riveting past is interweaved with the remnants of a series of conquests that took place over many centuries. In the ancient times, Corfu has been known as the island of the Phaeacian civilisation, which was an important commercial and mercantile centre so many eras ago. Then followed the rule under the Roman Empire, the fall of which left the island unprotected against raids of barbarians, goths and Saracens. Norman conquests gave way to the Venetian occupation that signaled a prosperous period for the island, leaving its evident marks at the core of the town’s architecture. The Venetian rule of Corfu was... passed on to the French, when Napoleon conquered Venice. The British rule that ensued brought with it the modern day infrastructure Corfu enjoys, before the town returned back to Greek governance in 1864. Having also survived two world wars, Corfu town has justifiably made the list as a UNESCO World heritage site.

A saunter around this town, the most strategic part of which protrudes out into the sea, will take you on a journey through time, filling your mind with images of ages past at a time when nobility was still at its height. Today all those centuries have lavished the old town with incredible charm, that is always in season.

The charming points of interest:
From our Mayor Mon Repos Palace Art Hotel, following the coastal promenade of Dimokratias Avenue up to the centre of the old town, you will be greeted by the imposing Old Fortress that stands like a bastion that overlooks the city and the sea. Opposite is the notorious Spianada or Esplanade square, which is a now a gorgeous, verdant public square making it perfect for checking out the local scene. Fitted with benches that offer a wonderful repose spot, it also sports a cricket field and the Bosketo (Boschetto) garden with the Durrell monument.

With the Palace of St. Michael and St. George at one end, and the romantic run of arches of Liston separating it from the labyrinth of cobblestone streets, the Esplanade is where it is all happening. Centered around it are numerous colourful cafes and shops providing ample choice for you coffee and cake break! A perfect location for soaking up the local scene, and for feeling the heartbeat of the town.

Make the time and walk around the centre, discovering your personal favourite among all the historic treasures that are (not so) hidden, and experience a fulfilling morning, a lazy and leisurely afternoon, or an enchanting evening, as the town is sensational around the clock and calendar.
